A Foodie-exploration Retreat
The Allure
From the moment your plane begins its descent into Ponta Delgada, you will fully understand why The Azores are referred to as the "Hawaii of Europe". You will find this amazing area of the "Islands of Colors" full of Mother Nature’s unbelievable beauty from your very first to your very last glimpse. This Portuguese archipelago, The Azores, is set in the middle of the Atlantic, between the United States and continental Portugal and consists of nine islands. We will be visiting Sao Miguel, the the island nicknamed ”Ihla Verde” for its lush, green natural beauty. This is the largest island in the archipelago and is home to the regional capital, Ponta Delgada.
We will indulge in the dramatic beauty of this incredible island, as we explore the cuisine and the culture. Every region offers the opportunity to explore the lush, gorgeous sprawling fields, free-roaming farm animals, hydrangea lined country roads, streets and walkways, amazing volcanic rock coastline, the ever-rolling ocean seas and unruffled beaches. We will luxuriate in the warm waters of the thermal pools that are fed from deep within the earth, and we will explore the gorgeous lakes formed by craters of extinct volcanoes through outdoor activities designed to explore and embrace their beauty.
Description
This is an Azorean foodie and wine exploration retreat for eight women in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, on the island of Sao Miguel.
We will be staying at an exclusive villa on the northern Atlantic coast. This is a private venue overlooking the ocean and has a pool, hot tub, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a huge relaxation space, outside yoga circle, spacious guest rooms, and plenty of natural beauty for lounging and strolling. We will escort you on an amazing variety of excursions as we explore this island in all of its splendor. You will have the opportunity to taste all of the specialty foods and wines of the region as we are served by a local Azorean chef at our villa, and as we visit many restaurants, markets and agricultural centers of Sao Miguel.
The Goal
We hope to provide our guests with an unsurpassed experience traveling this stunning island under the direction of an experienced guide, our own Andrea Kaubris, who knows the island like it’s her second home. This is an opportunity to visit the most dynamic and beautiful elements of the island with a seasoned and knowledgeable Azorean traveler. We will introduce you to the true culture that is unique to this region as you enjoy simply being escorted through the adventure of food, wine, culture and exploration to indulge in Azorean cuisine and unsurpassed natural beauty.
Why sao miguel, azores?
The Azores islands were discovered in 1427 by Portuguese navigators, and their discovery plays a very important role in the history of the country. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Portugal established its economic prominence as the archipelago became a center of trade for Europe, America and India, where the Azorean ports sheltered and serviced galleons loaded with a multitude of treasures from throughout the world.
Speaking of treasures…those of this island abound…its volcanic origin has produced an absolutely spectacular landscape that dramatically meets the ocean, and will be sure to leave you breathless more than once! The delicacies that are gently extracted fresh from the sea daily elevate the cuisine islandwide and are the purest form of “fresh”. The dense, rich, nutrient-laden soil is ideal for growing crops that yield deliciously earthy flavors which are then incorporated into authentic local food and beverage production. Finally, the ongoing geothermal activity can be enjoyed by visitors and residents, whether through relaxing and therapeutic soaks in “hot springs”, or with an amazing and unique Azorean meal (Cozidos) that is cooked entirely in the ground by the volcanic steam of natural hot springs.
We believe this island offers much in the way of private, natural and nearly transcendental exploration without the overabundance of tourists seen elsewhere. You will have the opportunity to immerse in the Azorean culture without feeling like a group of herded tourists. We will explore, savor and relish the tastes of food and wine (including non-alcoholic) on the island while experiencing all of the explorative and food-related uniquities that Sao Miguel offers.
What Makes This Retreat unique
Our retreat is based in Capelas, a small town on the north shore of Sao Miguel in the Azores. We will be ideally situated mid-island so all of our excursions will be easily traveled to within one hour.
This retreat is the perfect balance of culinary exploration combined with cultural and natural elements to provide you with an experience that will truly expose you to all the amazing and delicious beauty this region offers.
We will savor the unique flavors of the islands in many different ways! We will share local meals at a variety of traditional Azorean establishments, we will visit the local farmers’ market in Ribiera Grande to learn about locally produced foods while sampling items that are indigenous to Sao Miguel. We will taste many Azorean cheeses and wines. We will visit two sprawling tea plantations, and a small pineapple plantation, followed by a special celebration of this delicious fruit during a fun sunset pineapple cocktail hour. We will visit the local liqueur production facility which produces dozens of different liqueurs (all of which are available for sampling and purchase). We will dine on the quintessential Cozidos of Furnas-–a meal cooked underground in the volcanic geothermal steam. We will ensure that everyone has many opportunities to savor the delicacies of the sea, sample local breads and confections, and enjoy an incredible Azorean inspired chef-guide experience dining at our oceanside villa.
